With many years of progressive involvement in, and contribution to, the practical and institutional development of Advertising and Public Relations as a profession in Ghana, Mr. Mensa-Bonsu has, to his credit, the creation and production of many popular educational marketing programmes on television, the most popular of which is the National Science & Math’s Quiz. As a strong advocate of education, Dr. Mensa-Bonsu started The National Science & Math’s Quiz (NSMQ) in 1993 and since then, the quiz has seen 28 exciting editions. The NSMQ is a competition targeted at senior high schools and aimed at inculcating in students the desire to study and pursue courses in Science and Mathematics, develop quick-thinking abilities and a probing mind, while developing a healthy academic rivalry between schools. The quiz also serves as learning materials for the study of Science and Mathematics and a means of encouraging alumni groups of the schools to support and develop science education in their schools. In 2007, under the leadership of Dr. Mensa-Bonsu, Primetime Limited successfully executed the production of the maiden edition of the West Africa Science & Math’s Quiz, to promote the Study of Science and Mathematics beyond the borders of Ghana. Dr. Mensa-Bonsu has carried out a number of highly successful advertising campaigns for blue chip companies and institutions including the Bank of Ghana for whom he planned, created and carried out the campaign on the Redenomination of the cedi, creating the ever popular and famous slogan; “There’s no change in value, The Value is the Same”. Dr. Mensa-Bonsu holds a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, from the University of Ghana, Legon and taught Advertising as a part-time lecturer at the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, Legon for 36 years, 15 years of which was on pro bono basis. He also taught for many years at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), and the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ). Dr. Mensa-Bonsu also served as Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association and the Association’s representative on the University's Council, from 2002-2011. He was also a member of the Council of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana and served on many other Boards, including Ghana Films Industry Corporation, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, and Action Aid Ghana. In recognition of his invaluable contribution to education in general and to the development of his alma mater, the University of Ghana, the university named the Conference Room of the Alumni Centre after him in December, 2014 and then conferred on him an honorary doctorate degree in Law (LL. D) as an "Alumnus the University is Proud of " at a Special Congregation on 23rd March, 2016. The Advertising Association of Ghana also, in 2014, conferred on Dr. Mensa-Bonsu the Distinguished Personality Award. In November 2020 the Advertising Association of Ghana again honoured him with a Special Recognition Award. Currently, he serves on a number of Boards including the Odotobri Rural Bank, Accra College of Medicine, Chairman of the Board of Medifem Specialist Hospital, Chairman of Accra Fertility Centre, Chairman of Ave Maria School, Accra, among others. He just ended his term of office as the very first Governor of District 418, Ghana, a branch of the Lions’ Clubs International. He is married with three (3) adult daughters and seven (7) grandchildren.
